About Red Rock
Described
by Tourism NSW as the closest thing to heaven on earth, Red Rock is a
quiet seaside village on the NSW North Coast. Just 6 km from the
Pacific Highway, 580 km (approx 7½ hours) north of Sydney and 370 km
(approx 4½ hours) south of Brisbane. The nearest towns are Woolgoolga
(10 mins) and Coffs Harbour (30 mins).
The
Corindi River estuary offers shady picnic tables, children's playground
and shop with basic supplies and takeaway food. Fish, swim,
snorkel or just relax in the shade and watch the tide ebb and flow!
There are also two ocean beaches - Red Rock beach at the estuary and
Back Beach running all the way south to Woolgoolga.
Things to do and see
Nature walks Corymbia Cottage
sits opposite the forested section of Red Rock Reserve. Stroll along
the level path / boardwalk through the reserve to the boat ramp.
Look out for a variety of bird and plant life as you pass through
coastal heath, melaleuca and tall eucalypt forest, and mangrove
woodland. Allow 40 minutes each way. Or take the short cut - less
than 10 minutes - skirting around littoral rainforest.
Birdwatching Yuraygir National
Park extends both north and south of the village, and shares many
habitats and species. The estuary at Red Rock is home to one of
the most southerly nesting pairs of Beach Stone Curlew. Other notable
residents include Little Terns, Little Emu Wrens and Ground Parrots. A
full bird list for the park is provided in the Cottage. Please contact
us by email if you have any specific birding questions, or click on the
link for more details about the park and its flora and fauna.
Swimming, fishing, whale watching Swimming
is hard work! At Red Rock you can jump in the river mouth and ride home
with the incoming tide. Fish from the river or two beaches for
flathead, jewfish and bream. Wade across the river at low tide into the
national park. April and November are the peak whale watching months,
with over 2000 whales passing each season. Fishing and whale watching
tours operate from Coffs Harbour.
